Transformers demand oil that is both filtered and dried. Over time, the insulating oil tends to absorb moisture and becomes contaminated with various impurities such as fibres, particles, ageing byproducts, and soot. Even unused oil may not be entirely clean, having absorbed moisture from the air or experienced pollution during storage. The effectiveness of the oil as an insulator significantly diminishes with increasing moisture levels. Therefore, transformer oil filtration becomes a critical process to eliminate solid particles, dissolved gases, and water. Filtering, dehydrating, and degassing enhance the electrical properties of the oil, maintaining the transformer’s condition and extending its lifespan.
There are three primary types of oil treatment processes:
- Filtering: This process involves filtering transformer oil at approximately 40 degrees Celsius, effectively removing fine contaminated particles through a specialized filtering device.
- Purification with Drying Process: This step focuses on purifying the oil while simultaneously removing any residual moisture through a drying process.
- Regeneration or Reclamation with Degassing: This process involves the regeneration or reclamation of the oil, coupled with degassing to enhance its overall quality.
The importance of these oil treatment processes lies in mitigating issues such as arcing, overheating (which can reduce electrical efficiency and transformer lifespan), and corona discharges, which could otherwise compromise the insulating strength of the transformer oil.
